Global Roots Canvas is DIPACT’s artist development and community arts programme. Five artists develop their practice through paid commissions, mentoring, workshops, experimentation and public-facing work. Themes include identity, belonging, displacement, memory and lived experience.
✨ GLOBAL ROOTS CANVAS — MORE THAN AN EXHIBITION
Across Manchester and Greater Manchester, our five artists have taken their practices beyond the studio — into communities, galleries and cultural spaces, creating opportunities for people to experience art, meet artists, experiment, make, speak and be heard.
From community settings to Manchester Art Gallery @mcrartgallery , The Whitworth @whitworthart , Factory International @factory_international and many other spaces, the workshops have created moments of connection between artists and the people around them.
The artists haven’t simply shared what they do. They have opened up their practices and invited others into the creative process — giving people space to explore their own identity, memories, stories and ideas through art.
And perhaps that is what Global Roots Canvas really means to us.
The canvas is not only the work hanging on the gallery wall.
It is the artists.
It is the participants.
It is the conversations.
It is every mark made, every story shared, and every person who became part of the journey.
Now, as we move towards the exhibition, all of those experiences come with us.

Our first Global Roots Canvas exhibition opens at 1853 Studios, with a private launch on 18 September, followed by the public exhibition from 19–29 September 2026.
